Transfer an eSIM to a new iPhone safely
Confirm carrier support, Apple Account, software version, Bluetooth, proximity, and the point when the old SIM deactivates.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
eSIM Quick Transfer works only when the carrier supports it. Apple’s current procedure requires both iPhones to be signed in to the Apple Account, the previous iPhone unlocked with its passcode, both devices nearby with Bluetooth on, and current supported iOS versions. On the new iPhone, open Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM, then choose a listed plan or Transfer From Nearby iPhone. When the plan activates on the new iPhone, the previous SIM is deactivated. If Quick Transfer is unavailable, use the carrier’s activation, app, link, or QR-code method.

Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Prepare both devices
Unlock the old iPhone, place it beside the new one, enable Bluetooth, and connect both to reliable power and networking.
- 02
Start from the new iPhone
Open Settings, Cellular, Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM, then select the existing number or Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
- 03
Approve on the old iPhone
Confirm Transfer and enter the verification code shown on the new iPhone if requested.
- 04
Test before erasing the old phone
Wait for activation, then test an outgoing call, incoming call, SMS where applicable, and cellular data on the new iPhone.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer From Nearby iPhone is absent | Confirm carrier support, software, account, Bluetooth, proximity, and plan eligibility. | Quick Transfer is not available for the current combination. |
| Old SIM stops working | Check whether the new plan has activated and test service there. | Apple deactivates the previous SIM when transfer succeeds. |
| Transfer fails repeatedly | Use the carrier’s supported app, QR code, link, or direct activation process. | The carrier remains the authority for provisioning the line. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not erase or trade in the old iPhone until the new line passes real call and data tests.
- Do not share carrier QR codes, verification codes, or account credentials with an unverified helper.
- Do not assume that general iPhone eSIM support means the carrier supports Quick Transfer.
