Clear Roomba Error 9 without forcing the bumper

Separate trapped debris from a visibly dislodged bumper, then use the model-specific service boundary instead of repeatedly restarting the robot.

Start here

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Error 9 means the bumper is stuck or cannot move freely. Tap the front and sides of the bumper several times to release loose debris, then press CLEAN to restart. If one side visibly protrudes or the bumper still binds, stop treating it as loose dirt: compare the robot with iRobot’s dislodged-bumper examples and follow only the procedure for the exact series. Contact iRobot if the error remains or you do not want to remove covers and screws.

These visuals are tied to the cited support pages. Read each model scope and observation before using it as a match.

Dislodged bumper inspection point

Use the circled edge as an inspection reference; the image does not prove that every Error 9 is a dislodged bumper.

Look for
Compare the left and right bumper edges and look for one side protruding beyond its normal seated position.
Applies to
The dislodged-bumper branch in iRobot’s Error 9 support workflow; follow the separate procedure for the exact robot series.

e and i series dislodged-bumper procedure

Official iRobot procedure embedded from the support article; pause before each fastener or cover step and verify the series.

Look for
Watch the cover, screw, and bumper sequence rather than transferring the steps to a different Roomba construction.
Applies to
Roomba e and i series only, as labeled by iRobot in the dislodged-bumper support article.

j7 series dislodged-bumper procedure

Official j7-series procedure embedded from iRobot’s support article and kept separate from the e/i-series construction.

Look for
Confirm the robot matches the j7 layout shown before removing a cover or touching bumper hardware.
Applies to
Roomba j7-series robots covered by the linked iRobot dislodged-bumper procedure.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Roomba models that announce Error 9 or nine beeps, and supported 600, 700, 800, 900, e, i, or j-series robots with a bumper that appears out of position.

Does not cover

Collision-sensor electronics, cracked bumper parts, unrelated wheel errors, or opening a robot that is wet, hot, damaged, or under a service restriction.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Test free bumper travel

Briskly tap the front and both sides of the bumper several times, then press and release it across its width. Remove only loose debris that becomes accessible.

  2. 02

Restart once from a clear floor

Place the robot on open flooring and press CLEAN. Observe whether the bumper moves evenly before the error returns.

  3. 03

    Inspect for a dislodged side

Turn the powered-down robot over and compare both bumper edges with iRobot’s correct and dislodged examples. A side that sticks outward is a different branch from hidden debris.

  4. 04

Use only the exact series procedure

If the bumper is dislodged and you are comfortable servicing it, follow iRobot’s instructions for the exact 600, 700/800/900, e/i, or j-series construction. Otherwise contact Customer Care.

What you seeCheck nextWhat it means
The bumper now moves evenly and Error 9 clearsRun a short mission in an uncluttered area.Loose debris was the likely cause; no cover removal is justified.
One bumper side visibly sticks outMatch the model to the official dislodged-bumper section. The bumper is likely out of position rather than merely dirty.
The bumper looks aligned but Error 9 repeatsStop repeated restarts and contact iRobot with the serial number. The remaining fault is not resolved by the official debris check.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not pry the bumper outward or force it past its normal travel.
  • Do not reuse screw counts or disassembly steps from a different Roomba series.
  • Stop and contact iRobot if parts are cracked, wiring is exposed, the robot is wet, or the error persists after the supported checks.
