Choose a USB-C cable by power, data, and video requirements

Read certified wattage and data-rate markings, confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode, and stop treating the reversible connector as a capability label.

The shortest reliable path.

Start with the source device, dock or monitor, and charger requirements; then choose a cable that meets every required function. Under USB-IF’s current certification rules, USB-C-to-USB-C cables are marked 60W or 240W, and certified cables faster than USB 2.0 also carry their supported data rate. For USB-C display use, the computer or phone must support DisplayPort Alt Mode and the cable must be full-featured for that path. A certified cable cannot add video, charging power, or data speed that either connected device does not support.

Procedure

Do this in order.

    Define the complete job

    Write down whether the cable must charge, move files, carry camera or storage data, and drive one or more displays at a stated mode.

  2. 02

    Match the power marking

    Choose a certified USB-C-to-USB-C cable marked 60W or 240W at or above the device and charger requirement.

  3. 03

    Match the data-rate marking

    For storage, docks, or other high-speed data, require the needed certified data-rate logo; do not treat an unmarked USB 2.0 cable as high speed.

  4. 04

    Prove the video path

    Confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode in the source documentation and use the monitor or dock maker’s stated full-featured or certified cable requirement.

    Test each function separately

    Check negotiated charging, a large-file transfer, peripheral discovery, and the intended display mode with the same cable.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Stop using a cable or connector that is damaged, discolored, loose, sparking, or abnormally hot.
  • Do not use a cable above its documented power rating or rely on an unverifiable wattage claim.
  • Do not buy another cable before confirming that the source port itself supports the required video and data modes.
