Fix AirPods that will not connect to an iPhone or Mac
Work out whether the failure is charging, Bluetooth, account sync, or pairing-state related before resetting the AirPods.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Charge both AirPods in the case, confirm Bluetooth is on, and try selecting the AirPods from the device list. If they remain unavailable, update and restart the phone or Mac, forget the existing AirPods entry, then pair again with the case beside the unlocked device. Reset the AirPods only after a normal re-pair fails.

Scope before steps.
AirPods and AirPods Pro connecting to a supported iPhone, iPad, or Mac over Bluetooth.
Beats products, lost AirPods, Activation Lock ownership disputes, or hardware repair for a damaged case or earbud.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Prove both earbuds can charge
Seat both AirPods in the case, connect power, and confirm the device can display charge for both earbuds and the case.
- 02
Check the existing Bluetooth record
Turn Bluetooth on and select the AirPods if they already appear in Settings or the Mac Bluetooth menu.
- 03
Restart the two endpoints
Restart the iPhone, iPad, or Mac, close the case for about 15 seconds, then reopen it beside the unlocked device.
- 04
Forget and pair again
Remove the saved AirPods entry from Bluetooth settings, open the case with both earbuds inside, and follow the on-screen pairing prompt or use the case pairing control for the model.
- 05
Reset only after re-pairing fails
Follow Apple’s reset procedure for the exact AirPods generation, then pair them again as a new device.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| The case shows no light or charge state | Test a known-good cable, power source, and clean charging port. | Restore case power before treating the problem as Bluetooth. |
| AirPods connect to another device | Remove the saved record on the failing phone or Mac and re-pair there. | The original host or its pairing record is the likely fault domain. |
| Only one AirPod appears | Inspect seating and charge status for the missing side. | This is probably an earbud charging or contact problem, not a whole-set pairing failure. |
| Pairing animation appears but setup never completes | Update and restart the host, then retry without other Bluetooth changes in progress. | Discovery works; authentication or saved state is failing later in the path. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Stop if the case or earbuds are swollen, wet, unusually hot, or physically damaged.
- Do not remove the AirPods from an Apple Account you do not control.
- Contact Apple when a charged, updated, correctly reset set cannot pair with more than one supported device.
