Fix one AirPod that is silent or not charging

Check each earbud’s charge state, case contact, speaker mesh, audio balance, isolated playback, and reset path before treating the pair as failed.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Fully charge the case, place both AirPods inside for 30 seconds, then open the case near the paired iPhone or iPad and confirm that each AirPod shows a charge level. Test the silent AirPod by itself, inspect and clean its mesh and charging contact, and confirm Accessibility audio balance is centered. Reset the AirPods only if the isolated earbud still fails.

Separate left and right AirPod charge states

The useful evidence is the separate left and right percentage, not the combined appearance of the pair or the case battery alone.

Look for
After reseating both earbuds for 30 seconds, confirm that the affected side appears independently and shows a charging state.
Applies to
AirPods models that expose individual earbud charge state on a supported iPhone or iPad; artwork and labels vary by model and software.

AirPods Pro speaker-mesh inspection point

Apple’s close view shows which acoustic mesh to inspect after removing the ear tip by the documented method; it does not authorize probing the mesh.

Look for
Compare the exposed mesh with the other earbud for visible debris, then use only Apple’s model-appropriate cleaning procedure.
Applies to
The AirPods Pro 3 form shown in Apple’s current article; mesh shape and cleaning instructions differ across AirPods generations.

Applies to

AirPods and AirPods Pro pairs where one side has no audio, lower volume, or no reported charging state.

Does not cover

AirPods Max, hearing-aid feature configuration, replacement pricing, liquid damage, or unsafe cleaning methods.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Read both battery states

Charge the case, seat both AirPods for 30 seconds, and open it near the iPhone or iPad to verify that each side reports charging.

  2. 02

    Reseat the affected side

Remove and firmly reseat the affected AirPod, close the lid briefly, then check its individual charge status again.

  3. 03

    Test the affected earbud alone

Leave the working AirPod in the closed case and play audio through the affected side.

  4. 04

    Check mesh and balance

Inspect the microphone and speaker mesh for debris, clean only by Apple’s documented method, and center Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual → Balance.

  5. 05

Reset only after the physical checks

Return both AirPods to the case and follow Apple’s model-appropriate reset and reconnection procedure.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not insert sharp tools or liquid into the speaker mesh or charging well.
  • Stop charging if the case or earbud is swollen, cracked, unusually hot, or liquid-damaged.
  • Contact Apple when one side remains absent after verified charging, cleaning, balance, isolation, and reset.
