Rinse, dry, and clear an Apple Watch after swimming

Use Water Lock for touch control and speaker clearing, then remove salt or chemicals with fresh water and dry the watch without heat or tools.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

After swimming with a supported Apple Watch, press and hold the Digital Crown to turn off Water Lock and play the speaker-clearing tones. Rinse Apple Watch Series 2 and later gently under lightly running warm fresh water after exposure to salt water or pool chemicals, then dry the watch, band, and skin thoroughly with a nonabrasive lint-free cloth. Do not use soap, cleaning products, compressed air, sprays, external heat, or objects in the speaker and microphone openings. Water Lock prevents accidental screen touches and clears speaker water; it does not create or restore water resistance.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    End the water session

Finish the swim workout if one is running, then press and hold the Digital Crown until the watch unlocks and plays clearing tones.

    Dry every contact surface

Wipe the case, Digital Crown area, back crystal, band, and skin with a nonabrasive lint-free cloth.

  4. 04

    Let muffled sound evaporate

Repeat the documented Water Lock clearing action if needed, then leave the watch in a dry, ventilated place without heat.

  5. 05

    Check before charging

Make sure the watch and charging surfaces are dry and free of residue before placing it on the charger.
