Clean AirPods Pro without pushing liquid into the wrong area

Identify the generation, clean only the documented meshes and ear tips, keep liquid out of the case, and allow Apple’s full drying time.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Identify the AirPods Pro generation before cleaning because Apple’s mesh and liquid instructions differ. For AirPods Pro 2 and 3, Apple documents a mesh-cleaning process using specified micellar water, distilled water, and a soft children’s toothbrush on only the illustrated meshes, followed by at least two hours of drying. Ear tips can be removed and rinsed with water without soap. Keep liquid and objects out of charging ports, never run AirPods Pro under water, and do not use sharp or abrasive tools.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

AirPods Pro owners cleaning ear tips, approved meshes, earbud bodies, and charging cases using Apple’s generation-specific procedure.

Does not cover

AirPods, AirPods Max, liquid-damage repair, wax removal from inside inaccessible components, disinfecting after medical exposure, or hearing-health advice.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

Remove and wash the ear tips separately

Pull each tip from its base, rinse the silicone tip with water only, wipe it dry, and leave it until completely dry before reattaching.

  2. 02

    Clean only the approved meshes

For Pro 2 or Pro 3, use Apple’s model diagram, saturate a soft children’s toothbrush with the specified micellar water, brush an approved mesh in circles for about 15 seconds, and blot it.

  3. 03

Repeat and rinse the brush path

Complete Apple’s three micellar-water passes, then rinse the brush with distilled water and repeat the documented pass for each cleaned mesh.

  4. 04

Wipe bodies and clean the case dry

Wipe exposed bodies with a slightly fresh-water-dampened cloth when needed, dry them, and use a dry soft brush around the case port without inserting anything into it.

  5. 05

    Wait the full drying period

Leave every cleaned component out of the case for at least two hours and reconnect tips only when completely dry.

Mesh location is not shown for the identified generationDo not apply the micellar-water brush procedure there.Apple’s wet cleaning method is location- and generation-specific.
Ear tip is still damp insideLeave it detached until fully dry.Reattaching it can trap moisture against the earbud.
Debris is inside the charging portUse only Apple’s dry soft-brush method and do not insert an object.Metal contacts and the port can be damaged mechanically or by liquid.
Sound or charging remains abnormal after full dryingUse Apple service rather than repeating aggressive cleaning. The issue may not be removable surface contamination.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not run AirPods Pro under a faucet, use sharp objects or abrasive material, or put liquid into the charging case or ports.
  • Do not use the optional AirPods Pro 3 immersion step on Pro 1 or Pro 2.
  • Stop and seek service when a component is swollen, cracked, corroded, persistently wet, or damaged by cleaning.
