Recover an Apple Watch that will not charge or turn on
Prove charger alignment, cleanliness, cable and adapter substitution, recovery time, and a force restart before requesting service.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Use the Apple magnetic charging cable supplied for the watch, seat every power connection fully, clean the watch back and charger, and align the magnets until the lightning symbol appears. Try another compatible charging cable and USB power adapter, then leave a fully depleted watch connected for up to 30 minutes. If it still does not respond, hold the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds to force a restart.

Scope before steps.
Apple Watch models showing a blank screen, a red lightning bolt, a charging-cable icon, or no charging indication on the magnetic charger.
Fast-charge speed comparisons, battery health estimation, physical battery replacement, or country-specific charger compatibility beyond Apple guidance.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Prove the complete power path
Push the charging cable fully into the USB adapter, connect the adapter firmly to a working outlet, and place the watch on the magnetic charger.
- 02
Clean and realign the charger
Clean both contact surfaces and reposition the watch until the charger magnets align and a lightning symbol appears.
- 03
Substitute cable and adapter
Try another Apple Watch magnetic charging cable and another USB power adapter, changing one item at a time.
- 04
Allow recovery time, then force restart
Leave the watch charging for up to 30 minutes. If it remains unresponsive, hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds or until the Apple logo appears.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| The red lightning bolt gains a ring | Leave the watch connected and wait for enough charge to start. | The watch recognizes the charger but the battery is still too low to turn on. |
| Charging works only with the second cable or adapter | Retire the failing accessory and confirm its compatibility before replacement. | The watch can charge; one upstream charging component is the fault. |
| No charging symbol appears on any known-good combination | Confirm alignment one final time and arrange Apple service. | The failure is no longer explained by the tested outlet, adapter, cable, cleanliness, or placement. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Stop using any swollen, cracked, wet, frayed, or unusually hot component.
- Do not pry open the watch or charger.
- Request Apple service when known-good charging accessories and the documented force restart produce no response.
