For setup or connection tests, turn on phone Bluetooth and move the sensor closer to the thermostat—even a small distance can matter—while reducing interference from walls, cabinets, mirrors, appliances, microwaves, and cordless phones. If the sensor is online but the room is uncomfortable, move it away from windows, direct sun, drafts, heat sources, and unconditioned spaces, then adjust which sensor is active or its schedule. Nest Temperature Sensors used with supported Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat generations, including sensors that are offline or produce uncomfortable room control.
Unsupported thermostat models, HVAC balancing, duct repair, adding zones, or treating one remote sensor as control for a separate HVAC zone.
Procedure
Do this in order.

Prove support and active selection
Confirm the thermostat model supports the sensor, then open the Nest app and verify the intended room sensor is active for the current schedule.

Shorten the wireless path
Turn on phone Bluetooth for setup, move the sensor closer to the thermostat, and repeat the connection test several times. Remove or avoid intervening cabinets, bookcases, mirrors, large appliances, cordless phones, and microwaves where practical.

Correct the sensing location
Place the sensor in a conditioned room at a representative height, away from a window, direct sun, exterior draft, vent, stove, hot-water pipe, or poorly insulated surface.

Align the schedule with how the room is used
Select the sensor manually for a controlled test, then adjust its schedule so the thermostat uses it during the period when that room matters. Seek HVAC advice before closing or greatly changing multiple vents.
