Diagnose Nintendo Switch Pro Controller buttons that do not work

Verify mapping, power, pairing, console and controller updates, SYNC reset, system input, game compatibility, interference, and service need.

Start here

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Reset custom button mapping first, then update the Nintendo console and confirm the Pro Controller has power and is paired. Update controller firmware from System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers, press SYNC once to reset the controller, and test each affected button under Test Input Devices > Test Controller Buttons. If the system test passes but one game fails, check that game’s compatibility and reduce wireless distance or interference. A failed system test or a severe recurring issue needs controller service.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers used with Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, or Switch 2 when buttons do not respond or respond incorrectly.

Does not cover

Control-stick drift, third-party controllers, physical disassembly, battery replacement, or assuming a game supports every Pro Controller button.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

Restore standard inputs and update the console

Reset custom mapping to standard inputs, then install the latest Nintendo console system update.

  2. 02

    Prove power and pairing

Press a button on the HOME Menu and read the player LEDs. Pair or charge the controller when the LED pattern shows it is not connected or has no power.

  3. 03

    Update and reset the controller

Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers. After the update, press the Pro Controller SYNC button once and press another button to wake it.

  4. 04

Compare system input with the game

Run Test Input Devices > Test Controller Buttons. If it passes, test a second compatible game while closer to the console and away from a TV rear panel, metal object, wireless speaker, or cordless phone.

Diagnostic matrix

Read the result, not the guess.

What you seeCheck nextWhat it means
No player LED appearsCharge the controller and retest power before diagnosing button input. The controller has no usable power for the input test.
System input passes but one game failsCheck that title’s manual and Pro Controller compatibility. The console receives the button; the software interprets it differently or does not support it.
The same button fails the system testRequest service for the Pro Controller. The failure is reproduced independently of a game and wireless layout.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not open the controller or apply liquid during supported troubleshooting.
  • Do not treat a one-game layout difference as proof of broken hardware.
  • Request service when the input test fails or the issue becomes severe enough to prevent normal use.
