Calibrate a Joy-Con stick that moves or responds incorrectly
Rule out remapping, attachment, outdated system or controller firmware, skins, calibration, game settings, and the official service condition.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Confirm the Joy-Con is registered as attached, restore standard button mapping if a wrench icon appears, and update both the Switch system and controller firmware. Remove skins or covers from the affected Joy-Con, then run the built-in control-stick calibration. If only one game is affected, update it and disable any tilt-control option that can mimic stick input. Nintendo says a Joy-Con that cannot calibrate or still responds incorrectly should be serviced without sending the console.

Scope before steps.
Joy-Con controllers used with Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch OLED when a stick fails to respond, moves without intended input, or behaves incorrectly in menus or games.
Nintendo Switch Lite built-in sticks, a Joy-Con not recognized when attached, unauthorized disassembly, contact-cleaner methods, game character movement caused by network lag, or repair pricing outside the cited region.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Restore the expected input map
If a wrench icon appears beside the controller, return its button or stick configuration to the standard inputs before testing movement.
- 02
Update system and controller
Install the latest Nintendo Switch system update and the latest controller firmware for the attached Joy-Con.
- 03
Remove interference and calibrate
Remove any skin or cover from the affected Joy-Con, then open the system’s Calibrate Control Sticks tool and follow the on-screen movement test.
- 04
Separate one-game behavior
If the issue occurs only in one game, install its updates, read its electronic manual, and disable tilt controls when they are active and unwanted.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| The Joy-Con is not registered as attached | Stop this calibration path and use the separate attached-Joy-Con recognition guide. | The console cannot reliably identify the controller, so stick calibration is not yet the primary problem. |
| The stick works in menus and other games | Update the affected game and inspect its tilt or controller settings. | The controller can deliver normal system input; the failure is isolated to one software context. |
| Calibration cannot complete or movement remains incorrect afterward | Start Nintendo’s Joy-Con service request for the non-working controller only. | Nintendo’s owner troubleshooting path is exhausted and the Joy-Con requires service. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not open the Joy-Con or apply undocumented cleaner as part of this calibration path.
- Do not send the console when Nintendo’s cited procedure calls for service of the non-working Joy-Con only.
- Arrange Nintendo service when the controller cannot calibrate or still responds incorrectly after registration, updates, accessory removal, and the game-specific check.
