Add a Philips Hue bulb that the Hue app cannot find

Verify the bulb’s power, the Bridge path, the intended setup method, and serial-number search before resetting a working Hue system.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Power the bulb in a compatible fixture and leave its wall switch on. Confirm the Hue Bridge has power and a network connection, update the Hue app, and add the light from the app. If automatic search fails, enter the bulb’s serial number. A bulb previously assigned to another Bridge must be removed from that Bridge before direct Matter pairing.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Philips Hue bulbs and lamps being added through a Hue Bridge, Hue Bridge Pro, or a supported direct setup method.

Does not cover

Non-Hue lamps, mains wiring repair, unsupported dimmers, damaged fixtures, or third-party hub menu paths.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

Prove the bulb has steady power

Install the bulb in a compatible fixture, turn the fixture on, and leave any wall switch supplying it on during setup.

  2. 02

Verify the Bridge before the bulb

Confirm the Bridge or Bridge Pro is powered, connected as documented, and visible in the current Hue app.

  3. 03

Use the app’s normal add-light flow

Start Add lights in the Hue app and keep the bulb powered while the system searches.

  4. 04

    Search by serial number

When automatic discovery fails, enter the serial number printed on the bulb or lamp and repeat the search.

  5. 05

Resolve previous ownership of the light

If the light belonged to another Bridge or is being paired directly through Matter, remove it from the previous system using the supported app flow before retrying.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Turn off power at the safe control point and stop if the fixture, bulb, or wiring is damaged, wet, sparking, or unusually hot.
  • Do not reset the entire Bridge merely because one light is missing.
  • Contact Philips Hue when a supported, powered light cannot be found by automatic or serial-number search.
