Fix a Pixel fingerprint sensor that will not recognize you

Check updates, finger placement, display cleanliness, screen-protector changes, enrollment, light, and the correct sensor type.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

For Pixel 6 and later phones with an under-display sensor, update Android, clean the display, and press and hold the same enrolled finger firmly on the sensor. If a screen protector was added or changed, use a Made for Google certified protector and re-enroll the fingerprint. Delete and re-enroll only after the simpler checks. Pixel Fold uses a side sensor and a separate power-button path.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Pixel 6 and later phones with under-display Fingerprint Unlock, with a separate diagnostic branch for the side sensor on Pixel Fold.

Does not cover

Forgotten PIN, pattern, or password recovery, biometric security policy, damaged displays, third-party repair, or fingerprint sensors on non-Pixel phones.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

Update and repeat the enrolled gesture

Install the latest available Android update, then press and hold the same enrolled finger firmly on the sensor until the phone responds.

  2. 02

    Control surface and finger conditions

Clean the display. If the finger is excessively dry, moisturize it and retry. Outdoors, shade the under-display sensor from direct bright light.

  3. 03

    Audit the screen protector

If a protector is fitted, confirm that it is Made for Google certified. If it was installed or changed after enrollment, delete and re-enroll the affected fingerprint.

  4. 04

Use the correct Pixel Fold branch

On Pixel Fold, clean the power-button sensor, check Touch to unlock anytime, remove case interference, and re-enroll while capturing the pad, edges, and tip of the finger.

Recognition fails only after a protector changeConfirm certification and perform one clean re-enrollment with the protector installed. The optical path or old enrollment no longer matches the current display stack.
The sensor is hard to access while the phone sleepsUse Google’s Lock screen options for Always show time & info, Tap to check phone, or Lift to check phone. The sensor may work once the display is awake; this is an access-state issue rather than failed recognition.
One enrolled finger fails but another worksInspect the failing finger and replace only that enrollment. The sensor can authenticate; the failure is limited to finger condition or stored enrollment.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not remove the backup screen lock until fingerprint authentication is proven stable.
  • Do not keep deleting every enrollment when the display or sensor is visibly damaged.
  • Use Google repair or support when a clean, updated phone cannot enroll or recognize fingerprints under documented conditions.
