Know when a DUALSHOCK 4 controller works on PS5

Pair a PS4 controller correctly, then distinguish PS4-format software from PS5-format software before blaming the connection.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

A DUALSHOCK 4 can pair with a PS5 console, but Sony states that it works with PlayStation 4-format software on PS5 and not with PlayStation 5-format software. Pair it by turning on the console, connecting the controller by USB, and pressing the PS button. If it controls the PS5 interface or a PS4 game but a PS5 game refuses it, that is a software compatibility boundary rather than proof that the controller is defective.

Official DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers used with a PlayStation 5 console to play supported PS4-format software.

Does not cover

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Check the game format first

Open the game information or version selector and identify whether the installed copy is PS4 or PS5 format.

  2. 02

    Pair through USB

Connect the controller to the powered-on PS5 with USB, then press the PS button and wait for the player indicator.

  3. 03

    Prove it with supported software

Test the controller in the PS5 interface and then in a known PS4-format game.

  4. 04

    Use DualSense for PS5 software

Switch to a compatible PS5 controller when launching PS5-format software.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not buy a DUALSHOCK 4 specifically to control PS5-format games.
  • Do not assume a charging symbol proves that the USB cable carries pairing data.
  • Use PlayStation repair guidance if the controller cannot pair or operate any supported PS4-format software.
