Sub generation matters. Sonos says Sub Gen 1, 2, and 3 work with all Sonos home-theater speakers; Sub 4 excludes Playbar and Playbase and also excludes several older standalone speakers. Sub 4 and Sub Gen 3 do not work with the S1 Controller app. Sub Mini supports a specific list of amplified speakers and home-theater products but not portable or unamplified products such as Move, Roam, Port, Connect, and Play. Check the exact room product, app, and number of Subs before purchasing.

Do this in order.

For Playbar or Playbase, exclude Sub 4; for other home-theater speakers, follow Sonos’s generation table.

Exclude Sub 4 and Sub Gen 3 from an S1-only household unless the broader system migration is resolved first.

Use the Sub Mini product list
Confirm the exact amplified speaker or home-theater product appears on Sonos’s Sub Mini support list.

Verify dual-Sub rules separately
If adding a second full-size Sub, match both Sub generations and the home-theater speaker against Sonos’s supported combinations.
