Find why Sonos Arc or Beam is not showing Dolby Atmos

Verify the Sonos model, HDMI return path, source codec, TV pass-through, content, and service tier before changing random audio settings.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Play a title and audio track known to include Dolby Atmos, then check the Sonos app rather than relying on the TV badge. Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, and Beam (Gen 2) require the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC connection. ARC can carry common Dolby Digital Plus Atmos, while lossless Dolby TrueHD Atmos requires eARC. If Sonos reports stereo PCM or Dolby Digital, trace the source, TV pass-through, service tier, and received format in order.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Sonos Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, and Beam (Gen 2) used for TV Dolby Atmos through HDMI ARC or eARC.

Does not cover

Atmos music played directly in the Sonos app, unsupported Sonos models, optical-only Atmos claims, or undocumented TV service menus.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Prove the Sonos endpoint

Confirm the soundbar model and complete TV setup in the Sonos app before testing an Atmos title.

  2. 02

    Use the labeled return port

Connect Sonos directly to the TV HDMI ARC or eARC port and remove intermediary switches or extractors for the test.

  3. 03

    Choose a controlled Atmos sample

Use a service tier, title, and audio language known to carry Atmos; start with the TV’s built-in app when available.

  4. 04

    Read what Sonos actually receives

While the sample plays, inspect Now Playing or About My System in the Sonos app for the input format.

  5. 05

    Match codec to ARC capability

Use TV Auto or Pass-through first. Expect Dolby Digital Plus Atmos over compatible ARC; require eARC for Dolby TrueHD Atmos.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not buy an eARC cable or extractor before confirming the required source codec and the TV’s documented capabilities.
  • Do not use the optical adapter as an Atmos troubleshooting path.
  • Contact Sonos or the TV maker when a documented compatible path never reports the expected received format.
