Start with the model, not the version number
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > About and note the model name. On Mac, use About This Mac. Apple’s September 14 lists overlap, but they are not identical. For example, iOS 27 starts with iPhone 11, while iPadOS 27 starts with newer iPad generations than the 26.7 security track.
A model that cannot run version 27 may still have a current security update. “No 27 offer” does not automatically mean the device is abandoned.
Choose iOS or iPadOS 27 only when the major upgrade fits
Apple lists iOS 27 for iPhone 11 and later. Its iPadOS 27 list starts with iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation), iPad Air (4th generation), iPad (9th generation), and iPad mini (6th generation). If your device qualifies, remember that 27 is a major platform change: confirm the apps and accessories you depend on, then use Settings > General > Software Update.
Compatibility answers whether installation is allowed. It does not prove that every app, accessory, or workflow is ready on day one.
Choose the iOS 26 or iOS 27 update shown for this iPhone
Apple’s current United States support image shows the real September choice: stay on the iOS 26 update track or move to iOS 27 when the device is eligible.

Use 26.7 when Apple offers the supported security track
Apple’s September 14 security page lists iOS and iPadOS 26.7 for iPhone 11 and later and for a broader iPad set that reaches iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation), iPad Air (3rd generation), iPad (8th generation), and iPad mini (5th generation). Install the track shown by Software Update when you need current security coverage without moving that device to version 27 yet.
This is a supported update option, not an unofficial downgrade. It can also keep an older eligible iPad current when iPadOS 27 is not available for that generation.
Match the Mac to Golden Gate, Tahoe, or Sequoia
Apple lists macOS Golden Gate 27 for MacBook Neo (2026) and supported Apple-silicon Macs: MacBook Air and MacBook Pro from 2020, iMac from 2021, Mac mini from 2020, Mac Studio from 2022, and Mac Pro from 2023. The same September 14 release table also lists Tahoe 26.7 and Sequoia 15.8. Open System Settings > General > Software Update and install the current track that appears for your Mac and your compatibility needs.
A Mac can remain on a maintained older major version. The right update is the current supported build for the model and software you rely on, not automatically the largest number.
macOS 27 Golden Gate on a compatible Mac
Apple’s current macOS 27 image identifies Golden Gate. A compatible Mac may still offer Tahoe 26.7 or Sequoia 15.8 when that supported track better fits its software.
Use the image to identify the new major release, then make the actual update choice in System Settings > General > Software Update.

Back up, install, and confirm the result
Install only through Apple’s Settings or Software Update. After restart, check Settings > General > About on iPhone or iPad, or About This Mac on Mac. Reopen the apps, external displays, audio devices, security tools, and accessibility features that matter to your routine before deleting the backup.
The visible version confirms the update finished. The short workflow check confirms that the new software still supports the job you updated the device to do.
Make the choice
Choose the situation that sounds like yours
Both appear in Apple’s September 14 release record; choose by compatibility needs rather than novelty.
The wider 26.7 device list keeps some older iPads on a current security track.
Compatibility is not the same as workflow readiness.
Do not force Golden Gate 27 with an unofficial installer or assume the Mac is unprotected.
