The useful differences
What changes when you use it
Compare eligible devices you actually want protected, not every Apple logo in the house.
Monthly premium
Each extra eligible device adds $5.99
Compare with the household’s real premiums
Whose devices?
Do not combine different owners into this total
Eligibility still applies to every device
Theft / loss claims
Shared across enrolled iPhone, iPad and Watch
Not six claims for each device
Remove ineligible devices before comparing prices
Build a short inventory with one row per device and its owner. Apple allows eligible existing devices in good condition, generally four years old or newer; AirPods and Beats have a one-year limit. Diagnostics or inspection may be required. Individual devices must be associated with the subscriber’s Apple Account. Family uses verified Family Sharing membership, not a collection of friends’ devices.
Do not count a damaged device as a newly covered repair or assume an old pair of AirPods qualifies. First confirm the enrollment offer on the device. A bundle covering fewer products than your spreadsheet assumes is not the bargain in the spreadsheet.

Individual product reference
Check the product shape before comparing its capabilities.
The official reference identifies the product, not a measured result or a promise of accessory compatibility.
Model scope
United States households comparing AppleCare One Individual and Family with device-specific AppleCare+ under current September 9, 2026 terms. Calculations are illustrative premium comparisons, not insurance advice or personalized quotes.
Find the premium crossover for one owner
For one account, calculate $19.99 + $5.99 × the number of devices beyond three. Three devices cost $19.99 monthly; five cost $31.97; seven cost $43.95; eight cost $49.94. These are arithmetic examples at the listed rates, before tax, not enrollment quotes. Eight remains five cents below Family’s premium, so device count alone does not make Family cheaper at that point.
Compare those totals with the monthly-equivalent cost of the exact single-device plans you would keep. Annual plans require division by twelve, with cancellation and refund terms checked separately. Do not compare a theft-and-loss bundle with accidental-damage-only plans and declare equal protection.
For several owners, use the actual household bill
Individual cannot pool different Apple Accounts. Family’s $49.99 monthly premium is $599.88 over twelve months at the current rate, before tax. As an illustration, two Individual subscriptions with three eligible devices each total $39.98 monthly. Two with four devices each total $51.96. Family is $1.97 less than the latter, but $10.01 more than the former. Single-device plans may still cost less than either.
The result depends on ownership and coverage, not just six devices versus eight. Include only protection the family really wants. Apple says switching to Family upgrades existing plans; confirm enrollment and refunds instead of assuming two premiums must continue indefinitely.
A cheaper premium can still mean a larger claim bill
Add the service fee or deductible for a plausible incident on each protected device. Read the current state-specific certificate, especially for theft and loss. The annual theft-and-loss totals are shared: three for Individual or six for Family across covered iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Find My must be enabled at loss and remain enabled through the claim. AirPods do not gain theft-and-loss coverage from joining the bundle.
Choose Family when verified eligibility, account ownership, and desired coverage produce a worthwhile total. Keep individual device plans when they cost less for the protection you need. Insurance is a way to limit an uncertain expense, not a guaranteed financial return.
Make the choice
Choose the situation that sounds like yours
The bundle wins only if equivalent protection costs more separately.
Family may save premiums, subject to eligibility and claim terms.
Owning a product does not establish eligibility.
Check protection, not only the monthly price.
