Diagnose No Signal on an Elgato capture card
Prove the source, HDMI direction, copy protection, cable, and supported video mode before resetting capture hardware.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
First connect the console or source directly to a TV or monitor to prove it outputs video. Then connect the source to HDMI In on the Elgato and the display to HDMI Out. Disable HDCP only through the source’s supported setting, use the included or correctly rated HDMI cable, and set a resolution and frame rate supported by the exact capture-card model. Reset the capture device only after the signal path is correct.

Scope before steps.
Elgato HDMI capture devices displaying No Signal or failing to show video in capture software or on the pass-through display.
Capturing protected commercial video, model-specific driver installation, analog sources, USB bandwidth diagnosis, or unsupported EDID modifications.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Prove the source without the capture card
Connect the source directly to the intended TV or monitor and confirm that it produces an image.
- 02
Verify HDMI direction
Connect the source to HDMI In on the capture card and connect the TV or monitor to HDMI Out.
- 03
Resolve supported copy protection
For a source and content that permit capture, use the source manufacturer’s setting to disable HDCP before testing again.
- 04
Reduce the signal to a supported mode
Reseat the HDMI cables, use the included or correctly rated cable, and select a resolution and frame rate listed for the exact Elgato model.
- 05
Reset the capture hardware
Disconnect the Elgato device from the computer and source, wait one minute, reconnect the complete path, and retest.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Direct source-to-display connection is also blank | Repair the source output or display-input selection before reconnecting Elgato. | The capture card is not the first failed layer. |
| Pass-through works but software preview is blank | Confirm the exact model, computer connection, and capture-software device selection. | HDMI reaches the output, so the remaining failure is on the capture side. |
| Lower resolution or refresh rate works | Compare the original mode with the model’s supported-resolution list. | The previous input format exceeded a documented limit or cable capability. |
| Only protected playback fails | Stop attempting capture and use the content’s authorized playback path. | HDCP is operating as copy protection, not as a random signal fault. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Stop capture testing when only protected playback fails; HDCP is blocking the capture path as designed.
- Do not repeatedly change EDID values unless the exact Elgato model documentation supports that operation.
- Contact Elgato when a proven source, correct HDMI direction, supported format, rated cables, and device reset still produce No Signal.
