Fix a Fire TV Smart TV with video but no audio

Verify mute, choose the intended TV-speaker or external-speaker output, use Auto ARC and digital format settings, and restart before resetting.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Clear mute and raise volume first. For built-in TV speakers, open Settings → Display & Sounds → Audio Output and turn TV Speakers on. For an external speaker, turn TV Speakers off and set ARC Mode and Digital Audio Format to Auto. If the settings are correct, restart Fire TV before considering a factory reset.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Amazon Fire TV Smart TVs that display a normal picture but have no sound from the selected built-in speakers or external audio system.

Does not cover

Fire TV Stick audio on an unrelated TV, no-power or no-picture failures, Echo home-theater groups, or every third-party soundbar format.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Clear mute and prove volume

Press Volume Up and confirm that the TV is not muted.

  2. 02

Select built-in speakers when that is the goal

Open Settings → Display & Sounds → Audio Output and set TV Speakers to On.

  3. 03

    Configure the external-audio path

For an external speaker, set TV Speakers to Off, ARC Mode to Auto, and Digital Audio Format to Auto, then confirm the speaker input and volume.

  4. 04

    Restart without erasing the TV

Hold Play/Pause plus Select for three to five seconds, or unplug the TV for at least 30 seconds and reconnect it.

Built-in speakers work when enabledMove to the external speaker, ARC port, input, and cable as a separate branch.Fire TV can generate audio; the external path is the remaining problem.
Only one app or title is silentTest another app and inspect that title’s audio track before changing global output settings. The system-wide audio path may already be working.
Neither built-in nor external speakers work after restartRecord the output settings and contact Amazon before a factory reset. The problem persists across both output branches.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not factory-reset the TV before testing both output choices and the supported restart.
  • Do not enable built-in and external output assumptions simultaneously; select the intended path.
  • Contact support when multiple apps remain silent on both speaker paths after the documented restart.
