Fix a Roku player with picture but no sound

Separate TV mute and input faults from receiver routing, cable problems, optical output, and unsupported surround formats.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

If the Roku picture is visible, first clear mute and verify volume on the TV and any receiver or soundbar. Test another TV or receiver input and cable. If only surround titles are silent, set Roku’s digital audio output to Stereo; sound returning in Stereo indicates a format-compatibility limit in the TV, receiver, soundbar, or content path.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Roku streaming players that show a normal picture but produce no associated sound through a television, AVR, soundbar, or supported optical path.

Does not cover

Roku devices with no picture or no power, Roku wireless-speaker pairing, TV-tuner audio, or a problem limited to one app without cross-app testing.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Clear mute and input mistakes

Raise volume and clear mute on the TV and any AVR or soundbar, then confirm the audio device is on the matching input.

  2. 02

    Swap the physical path

Try a known-good TV or receiver input and change one cable at a time.

  3. 03

    Bypass the receiver or soundbar

Connect the Roku player directly to the television and use the TV speakers for a short test.

  4. 04

Reduce the digital format to Stereo

Open Settings → Audio → Digital output format and select Stereo when silence occurs only with surround sound or persists after cable checks.

What you seeCheck nextWhat it means
Every app is silentFocus on mute, input, cable, and the common TV or receiver path. The fault is broader than one streaming service.
Only surround content is silentSwitch digital output to Stereo and retest the same title. An unsupported surround format is the likely limit.
Direct TV audio works but the receiver path does notInspect receiver input, volume, cables, and supported formats. The Roku player can output audio; the intermediate audio system is the failing branch.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not factory-reset Roku before testing Stereo and a direct TV path.
  • Do not force a surround format that the receiving device does not document as supported.
  • Request support when known-good direct TV inputs and cables remain silent in Stereo across multiple apps.
