Fix a Garmin watch that will not sync with Garmin Connect

Prove internet, service status, Bluetooth, watch power modes, and the two stored pairings before removing the device.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

A successful Garmin Connect sync shows a green dot beside the device and a sync animation. If data is stale, first verify phone internet, Garmin service status, and Bluetooth on both devices. Restart the watch and phone, then disable Battery Saver or Stealth Mode if it blocks wireless connections. Only if syncing still fails, remove the watch from Garmin Connect and the phone Bluetooth list, then add it again from Garmin Connect rather than pairing it directly in phone settings.

Garmin Connect connection and sync indicators

Garmin identifies the green dot as the connection proof and the rotating arrows as an active synchronization.

Record whether the green dot is absent or present while the arrows fail to complete; those are different branches.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Garmin watches and fitness devices that previously paired with the Garmin Connect mobile app but no longer upload activities, steps, or current weather.

Does not cover

Garmin Explore-only workflows, a watch that will not power on, deleted activity files, account recovery, or model-specific reset procedures.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Prove internet, service, and Bluetooth

Confirm the phone has working cellular or Wi-Fi internet, Garmin Connect services are available, and Bluetooth is enabled on both phone and watch.

  2. 02

Request one sync and read the indicator

Open Garmin Connect and watch the device area for a green dot and rotating sync arrows. Note whether connection forms but data upload fails, or no connection forms at all.

  3. 03

    Restart both endpoints

Power the Garmin device off and on using its model instructions, restart the phone, reopen Garmin Connect, and request one sync.

  4. 04

    Remove wireless-blocking power modes

Check whether Battery Saver, Stealth Mode, or another documented power mode has disabled Bluetooth, then turn that mode off for the sync test.

  5. 05

Rebuild both stored pairings only if needed

Remove the device from Garmin Connect and from the phone Bluetooth settings, then use Add Device inside Garmin Connect to pair it again. Follow the matching iOS or Android workflow.

Garmin service status reports an outageWait and preserve the local pairing.Removing a healthy Bluetooth relationship cannot repair a cloud service interruption.
A green dot appears but activities stay staleWatch for the sync animation, verify internet, and note whether one activity or all data is affected. The local connection exists; the failure is in synchronization or the specific activity data.
The connection returns after disabling Battery Saver or Stealth ModeComplete one sync and decide whether to re-enable that mode after understanding its wireless behavior. The watch power policy, not a broken pairing, was blocking Bluetooth.
Pairing fails again after both records are removedCapture the exact code or error, phone OS, app version, and watch software version for Garmin Support. The supported local rebuild is exhausted and the failure now has actionable evidence.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not factory-reset the watch while the missing activity still exists only on the device.
  • Do not pair the watch directly from the phone Bluetooth screen when Garmin’s workflow says to add it through Garmin Connect.
  • Stop repeating remove-and-add cycles after one complete rebuild; preserve the error and contact Garmin Support.
