Fix an iPad screen that responds intermittently to touch

Use restart, a clean dry screen, accessory isolation, charger substitution, and case removal before treating the display as failed.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Restart the iPad, clean and dry the screen, disconnect every Lightning or USB-C accessory, and remove the case and screen protector. If touch works after an accessory is removed, Apple recommends trying a different outlet, cable, or charger. If the bare, clean screen still does not respond reliably after restart, arrange service rather than repeatedly pressing or flexing the display.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

iPads whose screen is too sensitive, responds intermittently, misses touch, or stops responding while accessories, cases, or protectors are attached.

Does not cover

A broken or detached display, Apple Pencil-only input, forgotten passcodes, app freezes with otherwise normal touch, liquid-damage repair, or internal display replacement.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Restart the iPad

Use the normal restart controls for the iPad model, then test the same touch area and gesture before reconnecting accessories.

  2. 02

    Clean and dry the screen

Remove water, debris, and residue from the display and test with clean, dry fingers.

  3. 03

    Disconnect every wired accessory

Remove Lightning or USB-C accessories and retest. If touch becomes normal, try a different outlet, cable, or charger before reconnecting the original setup.

  4. 04

    Remove case and protector

Take off the case and screen protector, then test the bare display without pressing harder than normal.

Touch works after disconnecting a chargerChange the outlet, cable, and charger one at a time to find which item makes the symptom return. The display can respond normally; the connected power path is associated with the failure.
Touch works after removing the protector or caseReplace or refit the accessory and keep the display edges free of pressure. The accessory, not the bare screen, was interfering with touch response.
The bare clean screen remains intermittentRecord affected areas and arrange Apple service.Restart, surface condition, wired accessories, case, and protector no longer explain the problem.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not press harder, bend the iPad, or continue using a cracked, lifted, swollen, or wet display.
  • Do not replace multiple chargers at once when one-at-a-time substitution can identify the interfering component.
  • Request service when the clean bare screen remains unresponsive or intermittent after restart and accessory isolation.
