Recover an iPad that will not charge or charges slowly

Prove the cable, power source, adapter, temperature, charging icon, and the correct force-restart sequence before requesting service.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Connect the iPad with a USB charging cable—preferably the supplied cable—to a working USB power adapter, an awake computer USB 2 or later port, a powered hub or dock, an Apple-certified accessory, or a powered compatible Magic Keyboard. If no charging icon appears, substitute the cable and adapter separately and let an iPad that is too hot or cold return to its acceptable operating temperature. Then use the force-restart sequence for either a Home-button or no-Home-button iPad.

Applies to

iPad models that show no lightning bolt or Lock Screen battery icon, charge slowly, or remain unresponsive when connected to power.

Does not cover

Opening the iPad, battery replacement, liquid-damage assessment, unsupported chargers, USB-C port cleaning, or diagnosing a computer USB port beyond power availability.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Build one supported power path

Connect a USB charging cable, preferably the one supplied with the iPad, to a working USB power adapter and outlet. Alternatively use an awake computer USB 2 or later port, powered hub or dock, Apple-certified accessory, or powered compatible Magic Keyboard.

  2. 02

    Read the charging indication

Look for the lightning bolt on the status-bar battery or the large Lock Screen battery icon before changing another component.

  3. 03

    Substitute cable and adapter separately

Try another compatible charging cable, then another power adapter or supported source, changing only one item at a time. Let an iPad that is too hot or cold return to normal operating temperature.

  4. 04

Force restart using the correct iPad controls

Without a Home button, quickly press the volume button nearest the top button, then the farthest volume button, then hold the top button until restart. With a Home button, hold the top or side button and Home together until the Apple logo appears.

What you seeCheck nextWhat it means
A charging icon appears but percentage rises slowlyKeep the iPad on the proven adapter and reduce active use while observing the battery trend. The charging path is recognized; available power, temperature, or concurrent workload may be limiting the net charge rate.
Charging works with the second cable or adapterRetire the failed component and confirm the replacement is compatible. The iPad can charge; one upstream accessory caused the failure.
No icon or startup response appears on a proven pathComplete the correct force restart once and arrange Apple support if there is still no response. The tested source, adapter, cable, temperature, and software restart no longer explain the failure.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Stop using a swollen, cracked, wet, frayed, or unusually hot iPad or charging accessory.
  • Do not force a connector or use a force-restart sequence for the wrong iPad control layout.
  • Contact Apple when a known-supported power path, accessory substitution, acceptable temperature, and the correct force restart produce no charging indication or response.
