Fix a Fitbit device that will not charge

Prove wall power, recovery time, clean contacts, spring-loaded charger pins, and the correct model-specific restart before requesting service.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Connect the Fitbit charger to a standard wall outlet rather than a computer and leave a fully depleted device connected for 60 minutes. Clean the gold device contacts and charger pins using Google’s documented method, then confirm every spring-loaded pin moves and returns freely. If it still does not respond, use the restart sequence for the exact Fitbit model while it remains connected to the charger.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Fitbit trackers and watches covered by Google’s current charging guide, including the documented Charge 5, Charge 6, Luxe, Sense, and Versa restart branches.

Does not cover

Google Pixel Watch charging, opening the device, replacing an internal battery, damaged wall wiring, unsupported charger substitutions, or the red-X account-sync workflow.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

Give a depleted battery a full recovery test

Connect the charging cable to a standard wall outlet and leave the Fitbit attached for 60 minutes. Do not use a computer for this test.

  2. 02

    Clean the complete contact path

Following Google’s current instructions, gently clean the device’s gold contacts and the charger pins with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. If documented stubborn buildup remains, use a pencil eraser on the gold device contacts and brush away every eraser fragment before reconnecting.

  3. 03

    Check every charger pin

With the charger disconnected, gently press each gold pin and verify that it springs back immediately. Replace the cable if a pin remains stuck or does not return.

  4. 04

Use only the exact model restart

While connected to the charger, use Google’s model-specific restart: Charge 5, Charge 6, and Luxe use three cable-button presses spaced one second apart; Sense and Versa models use a 10-second hold on the physical side button. For another model, open its official restart instructions instead of guessing.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Stop using a swollen, cracked, corroded, liquid-damaged, or unusually hot device or charger.
  • Do not scrape contacts with metal or improvise a restart sequence from another Fitbit family.
  • Contact Fitbit support when the device remains unresponsive after one hour of proven wall power, documented cleaning, free-moving charger pins, and the correct restart.
