Find which iPhone microphone is not working

Use Voice Memos, front and rear camera recordings, app permission, and unobstructed openings to isolate call, speakerphone, video, or app failures.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Remove any case or film and clear debris from the iPhone openings. Record a Voice Memo while speaking at the bottom of the phone to test the call microphone. Then record video with each camera while speaking at the top to test the speakerphone and video path. If recordings are clear and only one app fails, enable that app under Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone or contact its developer. If all controlled recordings remain unclear, Apple recommends service.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

iPhones whose voice is missing or unclear during phone calls, FaceTime, speakerphone, camera video, voice recording, or a particular app.

Does not cover

External USB microphones, Bluetooth headset microphones, cellular call-quality issues when local recordings are clear, app account faults, or internal microphone repair.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Expose the microphone openings

Remove screen protectors, films, and cases, then clear visible debris from the iPhone openings without pushing material farther inside.

  2. 02

Test the bottom microphone with Voice Memos

Open Voice Memos, start a recording, speak at the bottom of the phone, stop, and play it back at normal volume.

  3. 03

    Test both camera directions

Open Camera, record a video while speaking at the top of the iPhone, switch to the other camera, record again, and play back both clips.

  4. 04

    Check the app-specific branch

If Apple’s recordings are clear but one app fails, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and enable that app. If it already has permission or is not listed, contact the app developer.

Voice Memo is unclear but both camera videos are clearRepeat once with the bottom opening exposed, then record the result for Apple service. The failure is isolated to the bottom recording path or its opening.
Voice Memo and camera videos are all clearReview the affected app permission or compare call reception separately. The built-in microphones can produce clear local recordings.
Every controlled recording is unclearConfirm the case remains removed and request Apple service. The issue is not confined to one app or one call network.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not insert sharp tools, liquid, or compressed debris into a microphone opening.
  • Do not keep resetting app permissions when Voice Memos and both camera recordings are also unclear.
  • Request Apple service when controlled recordings remain unclear after cases and debris are removed.
