Fix a microphone that is not working in Windows
Separate mute, connection, privacy permission, selected input, level, app, Bluetooth, and driver-detection problems in the right order.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Check the headset or microphone mute control and connection first. In Windows, enable Microphone access and the relevant app or desktop-app permission, select the intended device under Settings > System > Sound > Input, and run a microphone test. Use the recording troubleshooter next. Reinstall audio drivers only when Windows does not detect the microphone after the earlier checks.

Scope before steps.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 computers using built-in, headset, webcam, USB, analog, or Bluetooth microphones that are silent, too quiet, or not detected.
Application-specific account problems, professional audio-interface routing, acoustic treatment, damaged connectors, or microphone repair.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Allow microphone access
Open the Windows microphone privacy settings, turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone, then enable desktop-app access when the affected program is a desktop app.
- 02
Select and test the intended input
Open Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, select the intended microphone, start the built-in test, speak normally, stop the test, and play the recorded sample where available.
- 03
Correct level and run the troubleshooter
Position the microphone correctly, adjust Input volume if the sample is too low, and run the Recording Audio or input-device troubleshooter for the installed Windows version.
- 04
Reinstall drivers only for non-detection
If Windows does not detect the headset, camera, or microphone after the earlier checks, use Device Manager to uninstall the affected audio device as Microsoft directs, restart, scan for hardware changes if needed, and update the driver.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| The Windows microphone test records sound | Select the same microphone inside the failing app and inspect its permission. | The hardware and Windows input path work; the remaining issue is application-specific. |
| The device is visible but the sample is very quiet | Correct microphone position and increase Input volume while watching or replaying the Windows test. | Detection works, but level or placement is preventing usable audio. |
| The device is absent from Windows Sound settings | Recheck physical or Bluetooth connection, then use Microsoft’s Device Manager driver path. | The failure occurs before app selection and may involve enumeration or the audio driver. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not remove every audio driver when one microphone works in the Windows test and only one app fails.
- Stop using a damaged cable, plug, USB connector, or unusually hot device.
- Seek device or computer support when the microphone remains absent after a proven connection, restart, and documented driver recovery.
