Mix eero generations without hiding the tradeoffs

eero says supported models are interchangeable and can be combined in one network, but every network needs a gateway eero with Ethernet to the modem. Models without Ethernet ports can only act as add-ons. Mixing older models with newer units can reduce network performance, and eero recommends disabling Multi-Link Operation when a network mixes Wi-Fi 7 and non-Wi-Fi 7 eeros. Choose the gateway and nodes by required ports and performance, not compatibility alone.

Procedure
Do this in order.

Choose an eligible gateway
Place an Ethernet-capable supported eero at the modem; do not choose a Beacon or eero 6 Extender as the gateway.

Place the strongest role deliberately
Use the model with the needed WAN/LAN port speeds and radio capability at the gateway or highest-demand location.

Add one node at a time
Add the next eero in the app, wait for the network to stabilize, then measure coverage and performance before adding another.

Handle mixed Wi-Fi 7 networks
If Wi-Fi 7 and non-Wi-Fi 7 eeros are mixed, follow eero’s recommendation to disable MLO for maximum cross-model compatibility.
