Fix missing or delayed Nest camera alerts

Check power, online state, event settings, video history, field of view, lighting, Activity Zones, presence modes, and phone-specific delay.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Confirm the Nest camera or doorbell is powered, charged when battery-operated, online in the app, and allowed to send the expected event notification. Check video history: if the event was recorded but no alert arrived, review notification type and recent duplicate-activity suppression. If no event was detected, correct field of view, obstructions, distance, and lighting. For delayed push alerts, compare another phone with access to the same home and, if needed, test the camera on another network.

Applies to

All Google Nest cameras, Google Nest doorbells, and Nest Hub Max devices with missing, excessive, false, or delayed activity notifications.

Does not cover

A camera that cannot stream video at all, subscription pricing, emergency monitoring, familiar-face identity disputes, wiring repair, or guarantees that computer vision detects every event.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

Prove power, online state, and the alert rule

Confirm the camera is powered or charged, online in the app, and has notifications enabled for the expected event. For missing package alerts, also check person-detection alerts as Google advises.

  2. 02

Compare the event with video history

Open video history at the event time and determine whether activity was recorded even though no alert arrived.

  3. 03

    Correct the detection scene

If no event was recorded, adjust the camera angle or position so the activity is in view, remove visual obstructions, reduce excessive distance, and improve a dim or washed-out scene where practical.

  4. 04

    Isolate notification volume or delay

For too many alerts, select only needed event types or configure Activity Zones and review Home and Away behavior. For delayed push alerts, trigger a test on another phone with the same home access, then test another camera network if both phones remain delayed.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not assume a missing notification proves that no activity occurred; inspect video history when available.
  • Do not disable all event recording merely to reduce excessive notifications; adjust the specific event or zone deliberately.
  • Contact Google support when powered, online cameras record events but repeatable alerts remain missing or delayed across two supported phones and a proven network.
