Fix a Ring camera that keeps falling offline
Use Device Health, RSSI, a mounting-location test, and a controlled power and network path to separate weak Wi-Fi from power or device faults.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Open the Ring app’s Device Health page and record RSSI before resetting anything. Test Wi-Fi at the mounted location, remove dense or metal obstructions where practical, and compare the device closer to the access point. If RSSI improves but the camera still drops, investigate power and the device; if RSSI stays poor, repair coverage before replacing the camera.

Ring Quick Help: checking Device Health
Ring’s support video shows the in-app route to Device Health, where the before-state should be recorded before moving hardware or resetting the device.
- Look for
- Find the affected device, open Device Health, and record Signal Strength, Status, power details, and any other available diagnostics.
- Applies to
- Ring devices whose current app exposes the Device Health page; field names and navigation can vary by device and app release.
Reconnect a Ring device that is offline
Use Ring’s device-specific reconnection flow only after preserving Device Health and ruling out a wider internet or service problem.
- Look for
- Keep the Wi-Fi password available, remain near the device during setup, and follow the reconnect route shown for the selected Ring device.
- Applies to
- Supported Ring cameras and doorbells covered by the cited offline-device article; hardwired power work remains outside this video workflow.

Scope before steps.
Internet-connected Ring doorbells and cameras that show offline events, delayed Live View, missed alerts, or weak signal in Device Health.
Ring service outages, unsupported network authentication, electrical rewiring, local recording alternatives, or legal placement requirements.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Read Device Health before touching the network
Open Ring app → Devices → the affected device → Device Settings → Device Health, then record signal strength, power status, and other available diagnostics.
- 02
Separate one-device trouble from an outage
Check another Ring device and another internet service. If all devices fail, test the router and internet path before working on the camera.
- 03
Test the mounting position
Use a phone at the exact camera position, then compare RSSI after temporarily moving the camera or a mesh node closer and into a clearer path.
- 04
Improve the relay, not only the endpoint
Place a mesh node or Chime Pro where it still receives a good upstream connection, then recheck the Ring device’s RSSI and Live View latency.
- 05
Recheck power after Wi-Fi is credible
Inspect battery level, charging, plug-in adapter, or documented low-voltage status. Power-cycle once, then compare the next offline event with RSSI.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| RSSI is 0 to -60 | Investigate internet upload, power, service state, and the individual device. | Ring classifies this signal range as strong; Wi-Fi strength is less likely to be the main fault. |
| RSSI is -60 to -70 | Compare Live View and alerts after a small placement improvement. | Ring classifies the connection as usable but improvable. |
| RSSI is -70 to -80 or worse | Move the access point or relay and retest before resetting the camera. | Ring documents likely delays, interruptions, or offline behavior in these ranges. |
| RSSI improves but offline events continue | Correlate power state, battery, adapter, firmware, and outage status with the next event. | Coverage changed successfully; another condition remains. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not factory-reset the camera before recording Device Health and placement results.
- Do not perform electrical work on a hardwired doorbell unless qualified to do so.
- Contact Ring when a correctly powered device remains offline with strong RSSI and a working internet connection.
