Test a USB camera with Nintendo Switch 2

Use Nintendo’s built-in camera test before relying on a third-party webcam for GameChat or camera-enabled games.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Nintendo Switch 2 supports the official Nintendo Switch 2 Camera and some third-party USB cameras, but Nintendo does not guarantee every camera or stable operation for every model. Connect the camera to the top USB-C port or, in TV mode, a dock USB port, then open System Settings, Controllers & Accessories, Test USB Camera. Passing the system test proves basic camera operation; the intended game or GameChat feature must also support camera use.

Applies to

Official Nintendo Switch 2 Camera and third-party USB cameras evaluated with a Nintendo Switch 2 console.

Does not cover

Nintendo Switch 1, capture cards, professional cameras through converters, unsupported adapters, or game-specific camera design.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Build the shortest path

Connect the camera directly to the top console USB-C port for the first test.

  2. 02

    Run Nintendo’s camera test

Open System Settings, Controllers & Accessories, Test USB Camera and confirm a stable image.

  3. 03

    Test the intended mode

Open GameChat or the exact supported game and verify framing, audio path, and camera behavior.

  4. 04

Move to the dock only after proof

For TV mode, reconnect through a dock USB port and repeat the camera test before use.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not purchase a third-party camera without a return path if Nintendo has not confirmed the exact model.
  • Do not force a connector or use an unstable multi-adapter chain.
  • Do not leave a camera active when privacy expectations require its shutter or disconnection.
