Choose a microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2
Identify the Express standard, supported capacity, first-use update, and data limits before reusing a Nintendo Switch card or buying storage.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards up to 2 TB for downloadable software, update data, DLC, screenshots, and captured video. A regular microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card from the original Nintendo Switch cannot store or run Switch 2 software; it can only be used to import screenshots and videos from a Switch. Nintendo recommends licensed products, but its support FAQ says any card up to 2 TB that meets the microSD Express standard is supported. The first use requires a system update over the internet.

Nintendo Switch 2 owners choosing removable storage for digital games, DLC, updates, screenshots, and captured video.
Original Nintendo Switch storage selection, counterfeit-card testing, recovery from failed media, retail recommendations, or moving game save data to a card.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Require the Express standard
Choose a card explicitly marked microSD Express. Do not treat ordinary microSDXC, U3, V30, A2, or a familiar brand name as a substitute.
- 02
Choose capacity by the library
Compare the installed and planned digital-game sizes with free internal storage, then choose one supported card up to 2 TB with room for updates and DLC.
- 03
Prefer a verifiable product
Use Nintendo’s licensed-product mark or a card whose manufacturer, exact model, capacity, warranty, and microSD Express specification can be verified.
- 04
Update before first use
Install the current Switch 2 system update over the internet, power the console off, insert the card in the documented orientation, then power on and complete setup.
- 05
Verify the actual storage role
Confirm the card appears in Data Management and test a small download. Keep game save data expectations separate from software and capture storage.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Card says microSDXC but not microSD Express | Do not buy it for Switch 2 game storage. | The physical size and XC capacity class do not establish Express compatibility. |
| An original Switch card contains screenshots | Use the Switch 2 import option rather than treating it as normal storage. | Nintendo permits importing old captures but not using that card for Switch 2 software. |
| A genuine Express card is not detected on first use | Confirm the console update, power-off insertion, and card contacts. | The first-use software requirement or physical connection is not yet proven. |
| Save data does not move to the card | Leave save data in system memory. | This is Nintendo’s designed storage boundary, not a card fault. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not format or overwrite an old card until screenshots and videos are copied or imported.
- Do not insert or remove a card while the console is powered on or asleep.
- Return or replace media whose capacity, standard, seller, or model identity cannot be verified.
