Connect Bluetooth headphones to Nintendo Switch
Check system version, pairing state, saved-device capacity, wireless-controller limit, competing device connections, and local-communication limits.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Update Nintendo Switch, put the headphones or speaker into pairing mode, and make sure it is not already connected to another phone or computer. Disconnect wireless controllers until no more than two are connected—a Joy-Con pair counts as two—then use System Settings > Bluetooth Audio > Pair Device. Nintendo Switch can save up to 10 Bluetooth audio devices but connects only one at a time. If a saved device will not reconnect, remove it and pair it again. Bluetooth microphones are not supported, and Bluetooth audio disconnects during local wireless communication.

Scope before steps.
Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED systems pairing or reconnecting Bluetooth headphones, earbuds, or speakers.
Nintendo Switch 2 unless Nintendo’s model-specific support says the same, Bluetooth microphones, USB audio, headset chat support, or eliminating all Bluetooth latency.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Prepare the console and free a controller slot
Install the latest system update and disconnect wireless controllers until no more than two remain connected.
- 02
Make the audio device exclusively pairable
Turn on the audio device, disconnect it from phones, tablets, and computers, and enter its documented pairing or searchable mode.
- 03
Pair or reconnect from Bluetooth Audio
Open System Settings > Bluetooth Audio. Choose Pair Device for a new device or select a saved device and Connect Device. Remove an old saved device if the 10-device list is full.
- 04
Remove and rebuild a stale saved record
If a saved device still will not connect, select it, choose Remove Device, return it to pairing mode, and add it as new.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| The device appears only after another host disconnects | Disable auto-connect on the competing host or disconnect it before Switch use. | The headset was already occupied by another Bluetooth connection. |
| Bluetooth audio disconnects when local wireless starts | Use another audio path for that local communication session. | Nintendo documents disconnection during local wireless communication as a platform limit. |
| Audio works but the headset microphone does not | Use a game-supported microphone path instead of repeating pairing. | Nintendo Switch does not support Bluetooth microphones. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not raise volume aggressively while testing; Bluetooth device volume can change across hosts.
- Do not troubleshoot a Bluetooth microphone as though it were a supported Switch input.
- Contact the audio-device maker when it cannot enter pairing mode or connect to any supported host.
