Reject the wrong interface first
Confirm the drive is a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with Socket 3, Key M. Reject M.2 SATA products even when the card shape looks similar.
Sony excludes M.2 SATA. Matching card shape alone does not mean the drive uses the right storage protocol.
Check capacity and board length
Confirm 250GB–8TB capacity and one of the supported 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110 form factors.
The spacer position follows the drive length, and capacity is its own requirement.
Measure the assembled heatsink envelope
Measure the SSD with its heat-dissipation structure attached: up to 25mm wide and 11.25mm total thickness, with no more than 8.0mm above and 2.45mm below the board.
A bare drive can fit while an oversized third-party heatsink prevents correct seating or closure.

PlayStation measures the installed drive and cooling structure together; a compatible bare SSD can become too large after a heatsink is added.
Check the 25 mm total width and 11.25 mm total thickness envelope, including the separate limits above and below the circuit board.

Install with power removed and static controlled
Disconnect cables, let the console cool, touch grounded metal, follow the exact model cover diagram, move the spacer to the drive length, and secure the drive without touching its terminals.
The expansion connector and SSD are sensitive to static, misalignment, dropped hardware, and work performed while powered.
Insert the SSD at the connector angle
The connector notch and insertion angle must align before the drive is pressed down toward the spacer.
Confirm the terminal edge is fully inserted and level in the connector before bending the drive down or installing the retaining screw.

Secure the SSD at the correct spacer
The retaining screw fixes the drive to the spacer position that matches its board length; it does not compensate for a misplaced spacer.
Before tightening, verify the drive lies flat on the spacer without bowing and the connector remains fully seated.

Match the console body and cover layout shown before removing anything; do not transfer its cover-removal direction to a different CFI model group.

CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 M.2 SSD installation

Use the model number on the console to select this procedure; the visual construction must match before the cover is detached.

Format once and test one game
Reassemble the console before power-on, follow the PS5 format prompt, verify the reported read result, move one suitable game, and test it before migrating the library.
Formatting erases the drive. Testing one game first limits the damage if the drive has a compatibility or performance problem.
Make the choice
Choose the situation that sounds like yours
Sony does not support the SATA protocol in the PS5 expansion slot.
The cooling structure likely exceeds Sony’s size limits.
A physical or protocol requirement is still unmet, or the drive is faulty.
Sony recommends this check when an installed M.2 game has problems.

- Do not power on the console with its exterior or expansion-slot cover incorrectly installed.
- Do not continue if a screw or spacer falls inside the console; follow PlayStation service guidance before power-on.
- Do not format a drive containing needed data, because the PS5 format process erases it.
