Choose USB extended storage for a PS5

Match Sony’s speed and capacity rules, then separate storing PS5 games from playing PS4 games directly from the drive.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

A PS5 USB extended-storage drive must support SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later and have 250 GB to 8 TB capacity. Connect it directly rather than through a USB hub; only one extended-storage drive can be used at a time. PS4 games can be installed and played directly from USB extended storage. PS5 games can be stored there, but Sony requires them to be copied back to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before play. Formatting as extended storage erases the drive.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

USB hard drives and SSDs being evaluated as extended storage for a PlayStation 5 console.

Does not cover

Internal M.2 SSD selection, generic media drives, unsupported USB hubs, drive repair, or guaranteed performance for every product.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Check the full requirement set

Verify speed class, capacity, direct connection, and intended game type before buying or formatting.

  2. 02

    Format only after backup

Open Settings, Storage, USB Extended Storage, choose Format as USB Extended Storage, and confirm only after data is backed up.

  3. 03

    Assign PS4 games deliberately

Set USB extended storage as the PS4 installation location when direct play and internal-space savings are the goal.

  4. 04

    Move PS5 games before play

Copy a stored PS5 game back to console storage or a supported internal M.2 SSD before launching it.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not format a drive containing the only copy of important files.
  • Do not disconnect the drive while data is moving, formatting, or before using the safe-removal control.
  • Do not buy a drive on the assumption that USB-C shape alone proves SuperSpeed support.
