Restore PS5 sound over HDMI

Prove volume and mute state, HDMI output selection, system software, cable, direct-screen connection, and downstream firmware before repair.

Start here

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Confirm the TV, monitor, soundbar, or receiver is not muted and has usable volume, then set the PS5 audio output to an HDMI device. Update PS5 system software, substitute the HDMI cable, and connect the console directly to the screen for one test with soundbars, receivers, capture devices, and switches removed. If direct HDMI audio works, rebuild the downstream audio path one device at a time; if it does not, update the screen or audio-device firmware and use PlayStation Repairs.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

PS5 consoles that show a picture but produce no sound through a TV, monitor, soundbar, receiver, or other HDMI audio device.

Does not cover

USB headset microphone faults, Bluetooth audio, game-specific chat settings, ARC or eARC return-audio diagnosis, or opening an HDMI port.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Prove the audible endpoint

Check that the TV, monitor, soundbar, or receiver is not muted, has usable volume, and is on the correct input.

  2. 02

Select HDMI as the PS5 output

Open the PS5 sound settings and confirm the active audio output is the intended HDMI device rather than a controller headset or another endpoint.

  3. 03

    Build the shortest HDMI path

Update PS5 system software, connect the PS5 directly to the screen, and remove soundbars, receivers, capture devices, switches, and adapters for the test. Substitute the HDMI cable if needed.

  4. 04

Update the downstream device and rebuild

Check the screen or audio device manufacturer for current firmware and required high-resolution signal settings. If direct audio works, reconnect one intermediary at a time.

Sound returns when HDMI output is selectedConfirm the PS5 retains the intended output after a restart.Audio was routed to a different endpoint.
Direct-to-screen audio worksReconnect the soundbar, receiver, capture device, or switch one at a time. The console and direct HDMI audio path work; an intermediary or its settings caused the loss.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Stop using a loose, bent, overheated, or visibly damaged HDMI connector.
  • Do not force a cable or open the console or display port.
  • Use PlayStation Repairs when direct HDMI audio remains absent after settings, update, and cable substitution.
