Sonos 27 rolls out to S2-compatible products, with some features depending on hardware. Its September update includes a redesigned app and portable surrounds. If easier control is your reason to replace Arc or Beam, update and evaluate that change first. The new soundbar is not the only route to a better setup.

Portable surrounds can use a matching pair of Move 2 or Sonos Play near a compatible Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam Ultra, or Beam (Gen 2). That makes speakers you already own relevant to the decision. It does not mean any two portable Sonos speakers form a supported pair.

Prove the Atmos connection before paying for more speakers

Check the exact TV, HDMI ARC or eARC connection, source device or app, and the soundtrack you play. Sonos lists supported audio formats by product. Lossless Dolby TrueHD Atmos and Dolby Digital Plus Atmos are different paths, so the word Atmos alone is not enough to approve a setup.

A new bar will not fix missing source content or a TV connection that cannot pass the required format. Resolve that limitation first. Then compare the soundbar hardware rather than using an unsupported Atmos connection to judge its performance.

Choose physical hardware only for a missing job

Beam Ultra lists a 7.1.2 system with nine drivers, including two up-firing drivers. Arc Ultra lists a larger 9.1.4 system with fourteen drivers. That is a hardware difference, not a GearCurrent finding that one sounds better in your room. If you own Beam (Gen 2), physical height drivers are a specific change to consider; the Sonos 27 app update is a separate benefit.

Measure the available space and check the manufacturer’s placement guidance before choosing the larger bar. If your current bar already meets your needs, keep it. We cannot promise that additional drivers create an audible improvement from your seat without a room test.

Keep future features out of today’s verdict

Beam Ultra is announced for general availability on September 29. Sonos lists headphone linking with the new Ace Ultra for September 29 Early Access, voice additions for fall Early Access, and Custom Agents for 2027. These do not establish that an older Sonos Ace or every current product gains the same feature today.

Buy for the audio setup that works now, or wait until the promised feature is released and its exact compatibility is documented. A scheduled capability should not decide a purchase you need to use this week.
