Fix a camera that is not working in Windows
Check the physical shutter, Windows privacy access, Camera app, USB path, Device Manager, driver state, and app scope in a safe order.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Open any physical camera shutter or hardware switch, then check Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and enable device, app, and desktop-app access as needed. Test with the built-in Camera app: if it works there, troubleshoot the individual calling app. If it fails everywhere, run the Windows camera troubleshooter, test another USB port for an external webcam, and inspect the camera in Device Manager before changing drivers.

Check the whole path.
- 01Camera power and shutter
- 02USB or internal hardware connection
- 03Windows device and driver
- 04Privacy permission
- 05Camera or calling app
Scope before steps.
Built-in and USB cameras on Windows 10 or Windows 11 that are missing, blocked, black, or unavailable to one or more apps.
Camera quality during a poor internet connection, account permissions inside every conferencing service, enterprise policy changes, or physical webcam repair.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Open the physical camera path
Open the privacy shutter, turn on the camera switch or keyboard control, and reseat an external webcam directly in the PC.
- 02
Verify Windows privacy permissions
Open Camera privacy settings and enable Camera access, app access, and desktop-app access for the type of application being tested.
- 03
Use the Camera app as the control test
Open the built-in Camera app and compare its result with the affected browser or conferencing app.
- 04
Run diagnostics before driver changes
Run the Windows camera troubleshooter, try another direct USB port if applicable, then check whether the camera is enabled and detected in Device Manager.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| The camera works in Camera but not one app | Check that app’s selected camera and Windows permission category. | The hardware and base Windows camera path are operational. |
| The camera is absent from Device Manager | Scan for hardware changes and inspect the manufacturer connection or hardware control. | Windows is not currently detecting the camera device. |
| The camera stopped after an update | Follow Microsoft’s documented rollback or reinstall branch for the camera driver. | A driver change is plausible only after permissions and hardware detection are proven. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not disable security software permanently to make a camera work.
- Do not install a driver from an unverified download site.
- Contact the PC or camera manufacturer when the device is not detected after direct-port and hardware-switch checks.
