Fix Windows when the selected speakers produce no sound
Check output selection, physical controls, mixer state, audio enhancements, default devices, updates, and drivers without starting at reinstall.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Select the intended speaker or headphones from the taskbar output list, then check power, cables, the correct jack, mute, app volume, and whether plugged-in headphones are suppressing speakers. Turn Audio enhancements off and run the Windows audio troubleshooter. Confirm the device is enabled and set as default, especially after connecting an HDMI monitor. Install Windows updates and restart before updating, rolling back, or reinstalling audio drivers.

Scope before steps.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 computers with silent internal speakers, wired headphones, USB audio, HDMI or monitor audio, or another output device visible to Windows.
Microphone input, professional audio interfaces, Bluetooth pairing, application account problems, physically damaged speakers, or audio repair inside the computer.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Select the real output and prove hardware controls
Open the taskbar speaker output list and select the intended device. Check speaker power, cable seating, correct audio jack, hardware mute and volume, app volume, another USB port, and whether headphones should be unplugged.
- 02
Disable enhancements and run the troubleshooter
Open the selected output under Settings > System > Sound, set Audio enhancements to Off, then run the Audio troubleshooter or Get Help diagnostic for the installed Windows version.
- 03
Enable and set the default device
Open Volume mixer and make sure device and app channels are not muted. In More sound settings, confirm Use this device is enabled and set the intended USB, HDMI, speaker, or headphone output as default.
- 04
Update and restart before changing drivers
Install pending Windows updates and restart. If sound remains absent, update the exact audio device driver; use rollback when the failure began after an update, or uninstall and restart only after recording the current device and driver.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Sound returns after selecting another output | Set that output as default and confirm the unwanted HDMI or USB device is no longer selected. | Windows audio was playing through a different valid endpoint. |
| Only one application is silent | Inspect that application in Volume mixer before changing the global driver. | The Windows output path works; the app channel or its own setting is muted or redirected. |
| Sound failed immediately after a driver update | Use the audio device Driver tab and follow Microsoft’s Roll Back Driver path when available. | The timing supports a driver regression rather than a new cable or speaker failure. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not uninstall every audio device when one output or one application still works.
- Stop using damaged cables, connectors, powered speakers, or hardware that becomes unusually hot.
- Contact the computer or audio-device manufacturer when the intended output remains absent or silent after selection, hardware checks, troubleshooter, updates, restart, and the documented driver path.
