The useful differences
What changes when you use it
Both offer noise cancellation. The fit, case tier, and job matter more than the Pro name.
Fit
Consider if you dislike tips in your ears
Try the tip sizes; comfort is personal
ANC listening claim
Choose the exact version for your routine
More claimed uninterrupted listening; not our test
Charging
Do not buy the basic case for a wireless charger
Fits more existing charging setups
Health features
Do not buy for these jobs
Check device, software, and feature eligibility
A comfortable fit is worth more than another feature
Start with the earbuds you can wear for the whole session. AirPods 5 has an open fit. Pro 3 uses silicone tips. Neither shape guarantees comfort or a secure fit for your ears. If tips have bothered you before, try Pro 3 rather than assuming a new generation fixes that.
Both models now list noise cancellation. That removes a simple reason to choose Pro, but it does not prove they cancel noise equally well. We have no controlled listening test to settle that difference.

The official reference identifies the product, not a measured result or a promise of accessory compatibility.
Model scope
United States buyers considering the now-available AirPods 5, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, or AirPods Pro 3. Availability checked September 19, 2026; this is not a listening or fit test.
The cheaper AirPods 5 has a different charging routine
Apple lists AirPods 5 at $129 and the Wireless Charging Case version at $149 in the United States. The basic case charges through USB-C. The Wireless version also supports an Apple Watch charger and Qi charging, adds a Find My case speaker, and includes volume swipe on the earbuds. These are version differences, not settings you can enable on the cheaper pair.
Pay the extra $20 if wireless charging or volume swipe has a daily job. Otherwise, a USB-C cable may already do everything you need. Apple claims four hours of ANC listening for the basic version and five for Wireless; count case recharging separately.
Keep Pro 2 unless you can name the missing job
Do not replace Pro 2 simply to get noise cancellation or because the new model lists hearing features. Apple’s current USB-C Pro 2 specifications already include its hearing feature set. Pro 3 adds workout heart-rate sensing and lists up to eight hours with ANC. Decide whether either changes a session that your current pair cannot finish.
The eight-hour figure is not a promise for every mode. Pro 3 lists different claims for head-tracked Spatial Audio and heart-rate workouts. Compare the mode you actually use, and check feature eligibility before paying for a health-related use.
Buy for the devices you use, not the features on the box
Apple’s full feature lists assume current Apple software. Older Apple software and non-Apple Bluetooth devices may have limited functionality. Before switching, check your everyday phone and tablet, the charging surface beside your bed, and whether you need the case to help locate a misplaced pair.
Choose open-fit AirPods 5 when comfort is the deciding factor. Choose its Wireless tier for the charging and controls you will use. Choose Pro 3 when silicone tips suit you and a Pro-specific job earns the trade-off. If your current pair still handles those jobs, keep it.
Make the choice
Choose the situation that sounds like yours
Start with AirPods 5 rather than the Pro label.
The basic USB-C case will not do that job.
Keep it if there is no meaningful gap.
