Fix an Apple TV black screen or no-video signal
Prove power, input, HDMI cable, direct connection, and video resolution in that order before changing every display setting.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable, select the TV input that matches the connected port, and test a different known-good HDMI cable and TV input. If Apple TV works directly but not through a receiver or HDMI switch, isolate that intermediate device. Apple also provides a remote-button sequence that cycles video resolutions when the selected format cannot be displayed.

- 05TV HDMI input
Scope before steps.
Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD showing no image, a black screen, intermittent video, or an unsupported output after the television is powered on.
Problems limited to one streaming title or app, internal television repair, older Apple TV remote sequences, or a guarantee that every receiver supports every HDMI format.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Prove the selected input and cable seating
Unplug and firmly reconnect both HDMI ends, then select the exact TV input matching the port used by Apple TV.
- 02
Swap one physical variable at a time
Test another known-good HDMI cable and then another TV HDMI input, beginning with HDMI 1 or Input 1 as Apple suggests.
- 03
Remove receivers and switches
Connect Apple TV directly to the television. If direct video works, reconnect the receiver or switch only after checking its input, output, cable, and format support.
- 04
Cycle video resolution only after the path is proven
For Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, hold Menu and Volume Down for five seconds, then use the temporary image to select a compatible resolution.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| The TV shows No Signal | Verify Apple TV power, the selected input, both cable ends, and a direct connection. | The television is not receiving a usable HDMI signal on that input. |
| Video works when connected directly to the TV | Test the receiver or switch path separately and confirm its supported HDMI format. | Apple TV and the television can negotiate; the intermediate path is the failing branch. |
| A lower resolution appears but the preferred mode does not | Keep the working mode and verify the full cable and receiver chain before raising format requirements. | Basic video works; bandwidth or format compatibility is limiting the preferred output. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Stop using an HDMI cable with damaged connectors or intermittent video when untouched.
- Do not repeatedly force high-bandwidth modes while only a lower mode is stable.
- Contact Apple or the display manufacturer when Apple TV remains black through a direct known-good cable and input.
