Set Apple TV to match a movie’s range and frame rate

Keep a stable interface format, match video content when supported, verify untested modes, and distinguish normal HDMI switching from signal failure.

Start here

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

On Apple TV, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content. Turn on Match Dynamic Range to output a title in its original range and Match Frame Rate to use its original frame rate. Apple TV may show a brief blank screen or flicker while the television switches formats. If a mode is unverified, run Apple’s short display test instead of forcing it. Use Check HDMI Connection and reset video settings when a chosen format leaves the display unstable.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD owners configuring Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate with a compatible television or projector.

Does not cover

Calibrating the television, app-specific playback bugs, Dolby Atmos, receiver configuration, HDMI cable product recommendations, or QMS support guarantees.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

Start with a stable interface format

Choose a Format that the television displays reliably, then leave the home screen in that stable mode before enabling content matching.

  2. 02

    Enable dynamic-range matching

Open Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content and turn on Match Dynamic Range.

  3. 03

    Enable frame-rate matching

Turn on Match Frame Rate and play a known film-rate and a known TV-rate title.

  4. 04

    Verify uncertain display modes

Under Unverified Formats, select only the mode you need and complete Apple’s short display test; accept it only if the image remains correct.

  5. 05

    Validate the full HDMI chain

Run Check HDMI Connection, then test the same title through the direct TV path and the normal receiver or soundbar path if switching remains unreliable.

QMS is available but range changes still blankRemember QMS is for compatible frame-rate changes and works best with the same chroma.QMS does not eliminate every range or format transition.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not accept an unverified format if the picture is distorted, intermittent, or absent during Apple’s test.
  • Do not replace cables or reset the TV before testing Apple TV directly on a known compatible input.
  • Return to a stable verified format when video does not recover after normal switching.
