Connect an Apple TV that cannot join Wi-Fi

Separate Ethernet priority, password, captive login, range, router state, software update, and Apple TV radio problems.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

If an Ethernet cable is connected, unplug it because Apple TV uses Ethernet and hides the Wi-Fi option. Join the network under Settings > Network, or forget and rejoin it after a password error. For a captive network, update Apple TV and complete the secondary login on the prompted iPhone or iPad. Restart Apple TV, router, and modem. When the model has Ethernet, use a temporary wired connection to install updates, then unplug Ethernet and retry Wi-Fi.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Apple TV devices that cannot see or join Wi-Fi, report a password error, need captive-network login, or connect to Wi-Fi but require connection isolation.

Does not cover

An Apple TV app streaming failure while network access is already proven, account sign-in, unsupported enterprise authentication, router administration, or ISP repair.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Choose one network interface

If switching to Wi-Fi, unplug Ethernet and wait for Apple TV to expose wireless networks. Open Settings > Network, select the intended Wi-Fi network, and enter its password.

  2. 02

Forget a rejected network or complete captive login

For a password error, select the current network, choose Forget Network, and join it again. For a captive network, update Apple TV and follow Continue on iPhone or iPad to complete the secondary login.

  3. 03

Correct range and restart the path

Keep Apple TV and the router in the same room when possible, avoid metal obstructions, but do not place Apple TV directly on or within one foot of the router. Restart Apple TV, router, and modem.

  4. 04

Use Ethernet to update, then retest Wi-Fi

On a model with Ethernet, connect directly to the router or modem, join the network, install available tvOS updates, then unplug Ethernet and retry Wi-Fi.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not reset Apple TV while the router, modem, or ISP is also failing.
  • Do not leave Ethernet connected when the purpose of the test is to expose and verify Wi-Fi.
  • Contact the network administrator for unsupported school or business authentication, or Apple when current tvOS and a proven network still cannot establish Wi-Fi.
