Step 1
Pair at close range
Point the remote at Apple TV from about three inches away and hold Back or Menu plus Volume Up for five seconds. Place it on top if prompted.
This is Apple’s pairing sequence for current rechargeable remotes.

Apple marks the pairing buttons for the first-generation touch remote and the later clickpad remote.
Match the remote body first, then hold the two blue-ringed buttons while the remote is about three inches from Apple TV.

Step 2
Power-cycle Apple TV if pairing does not start
Unplug Apple TV, wait six seconds, reconnect power, and retry the pairing buttons.
Apple includes this power cycle before you repeat a failed pair.
Step 3
Restart the remote
Hold TV/Control Center plus Volume Down for about five seconds until the Apple TV status light turns off and on, then wait and press a button.
You can restart the remote without erasing Apple TV.

Restart uses different buttons than pairing: Apple marks TV or Control Center together with Volume Down.
Use the blue-ringed TV button and Volume Down only after pairing fails, and watch the Apple TV status light for the restart response.

Step 4
Check signal strength after pairing
On tvOS 18 or later, open Settings → Remotes and Devices → Remote and inspect Bluetooth RSSI. Move closer and clear obstructions when the reading is weak.
A paired remote can still misbehave because of range or interference.

After pairing succeeds, Apple’s Remote information screen shows Bluetooth RSSI so you can spot weak range instead of a failed pair.
Open the Remote entry and check Bluetooth RSSI. A weak reading points to range or interference, not a failed pair.

Apple TV running tvOS 18 or later, where Apple documents the Remote signal-strength indicator; menu appearance can change with tvOS updates.

- Do not open a rechargeable remote to replace its internal battery.
- Do not replace the remote only because TV volume control fails while Apple TV navigation works.
- Contact Apple support when a charged compatible remote still cannot pair after the restart and power cycle.
