Pair or restart an Apple TV remote that is not working
Charge and identify the remote, use Apple’s close-range pairing sequence, then restart it and inspect Bluetooth signal strength before replacing it.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Charge the Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote for 30 minutes, hold Back or Menu plus Volume Up while it is about three inches from Apple TV, and place it on top of the box if prompted. If pairing fails, restart the remote with TV/Control Center plus Volume Down, then retry. On tvOS 18 or later, check the remote’s Bluetooth signal-strength indicator.

Scope before steps.
Rechargeable Siri Remote and Apple TV Remote generations used with compatible Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD models.
White or aluminum coin-cell Apple Remotes, volume-only control of a television or receiver, internal battery replacement, or third-party remotes.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Pair at close range
Point the remote at Apple TV from about three inches away and hold Back or Menu plus Volume Up for five seconds; place it on top if prompted.
- 02
Power-cycle Apple TV if pairing does not start
Unplug Apple TV, wait six seconds, reconnect power, and retry the pairing sequence.
- 03
Restart the remote
Hold TV/Control Center plus Volume Down for about five seconds until the Apple TV status light turns off and on, then wait and press a button.
- 04
Check signal strength after pairing
On tvOS 18 or later, open Settings → Remotes and Devices → Remote and inspect Bluetooth RSSI; move closer and clear obstructions when it is weak.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| No Remote Connected notification appears | Confirm charge, restart the remote, power-cycle Apple TV, and repeat close-range pairing. | The Bluetooth pairing has not completed. |
| The remote works only near Apple TV | Inspect Bluetooth RSSI and remove objects blocking the path around Apple TV and the audio equipment. | Pairing works; signal strength is the remaining problem. |
| Navigation works but volume does not | Use Apple’s separate volume-control troubleshooting and verify the TV or audio-system control method. | The Apple TV Bluetooth path is working; IR or HDMI control is a different branch. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not open a rechargeable remote to replace its internal battery.
- Do not replace the remote solely because TV volume control fails while Apple TV navigation works.
- Request Apple support when a charged compatible remote cannot pair after the documented restart and power cycle.
