Clear a DJI drone gimbal motor overloaded warning

Remove shipping protection, debris, third-party camera accessories, and aggressive Sport-mode input before treating the warning as hardware damage.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Land and power off the aircraft. Remove the gimbal protector or buckle, every shipping or protection sticker on the gimbal arm, and any third-party filter or wide-angle lens. Unfold the aircraft, place it on a flat surface, and inspect the gimbal for debris without forcing the axes. If the warning occurred only during aggressive Sport-mode input, retry with gentle stick movement. A warning that remains after these checks requires DJI diagnosis.

Applies to

DJI camera drones whose app reports Gimbal motor overloaded during startup or flight.

Does not cover

Opening the gimbal, motor repair, crash alignment, lubricating an axis, or forcing a gimbal through its mechanical limits.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Remove every transport restraint

Remove the gimbal protector or buckle and any protection sticker on the gimbal-axis arm, then unfold the aircraft completely.

  2. 02

Inspect clearance on a flat surface

Place the powered-off aircraft on a flat surface and look for sand, grass, fibers, or another object obstructing the camera or gimbal. Remove only loose surface debris without forcing an axis.

  3. 03

Return the camera load to stock

Remove third-party filters, wide-angle lenses, or other camera-mounted accessories and restart the aircraft in its standard configuration.

  4. 04

Separate movement limits from a persistent fault

If the warning occurred only during abrupt Sport-mode control, retry once with gentle stick input. If it appears at rest or returns after the physical checks, stop and request DJI diagnosis.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not force, twist, lubricate, or disassemble the gimbal.
  • Do not fly when the warning remains at startup or while the gimbal cannot move normally.
  • Request DJI diagnosis after a collision or when the warning persists without protection, debris, or third-party accessories.
