A HomePod stereo pair requires two speakers of the same model: two HomePod mini, two HomePod 1st generation, or two HomePod 2nd generation. Both must be assigned to the same room in the Home app. A mixed pair such as HomePod 1st generation plus 2nd generation is not supported. Either a HomePod or HomePod mini pair can be used as Apple TV 4K home-theater audio, but Apple states that HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos, 5.1, or 7.1 surround sound.

Procedure
Do this in order.

Pair mini with mini, 1st generation with 1st generation, or 2nd generation with 2nd generation.

Put both in one room
In the Home app, assign both speakers to the same room, open one speaker’s settings, and choose Create Stereo Pair.

Confirm left and right
Open Audio Settings for the pair, tap each side to identify it, and swap assignments if placement is reversed.

Set Apple TV output separately
Select the HomePod pair as Apple TV 4K default audio output and verify the actual format expectations for that model.
