Fix an Insta360 X4 that will not join the Insta360 app

Separate a 5 GHz phone limit, a camera Wi-Fi error, a forgotten network, and an app-permission failure before resetting the camera.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Turn on X4 Wi-Fi from Shortcuts > Settings, enable phone Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and connect from the Insta360 app camera icon. First-time pairing needs on-camera authorization. Bluetooth alone cannot carry the connection; it only helps the phone find the camera Wi-Fi. If the app fails, join the camera Wi-Fi in phone settings using the password under camera Settings > Wi-Fi Settings. X4 defaults to 5 GHz and does not offer a manual 2.4 GHz switch. A camera Wi-Fi error or stuck Initializing state that survives a restart is an Insta360 repair path.

Applies to

Insta360 X4 connecting to the Insta360 app over the camera’s Wi-Fi, including first authorization and later reconnects. The X Series troubleshooting article also names ONE X, X2, X3, X4 Air, and X5; use only branches that match the X4 screen.

Does not cover

USB file transfer without the app, Insta360 Studio on a computer, X5-only iOS errors, X3-only firmware floors, or assuming a factory reset deletes SD footage.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

Enable the camera and phone radios

On X4, swipe down for Shortcuts, open Settings, and turn Wi-Fi on. Enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the phone, then open the Insta360 app and use the camera icon.

  2. 02

Authorize the first connection on the camera

On the first connection, confirm the pairing on the X4 touchscreen as the app instructs.

  3. 03

Join the camera Wi-Fi manually if the app stalls

Open the phone Wi-Fi list, select the X4 network, and enter the password from camera Settings > Wi-Fi Settings > Password, then return to the app.

  4. 04

Branch on whether the phone can see 5 GHz

If no device can see the camera SSID and the camera shows no Wi-Fi error, confirm the phone supports 5 GHz 802.11ac (Insta360 names iPhone 6s or later). Update camera firmware and the app, then retry. X4 does not provide a manual 2.4 GHz switch.

  5. 05

Clear a remembered network, then reset only if needed

For app errors 9,4 / 9,8 / 9,13 / -14178 / -14064 / 14061, forget the camera network, re-enter the password, and reopen the app. If that fails, use Shortcuts > Settings > Reset Camera > Confirm. If the camera shows Wi-Fi malfunction -10003 or stays on Initializing after a restart, contact Insta360 repair.

What you seeCheck nextWhat it means
Phone never lists the X4 networkTry a second 5 GHz-capable device. If none can see it, update firmware; if only one phone fails, the phone’s 5 GHz support or region setting is the branch.A missing SSID is not the same fault as an app that sees Wi-Fi and then throws a numeric error.
Camera Wi-Fi page shows -10003 or InitializingRestart once. If the same camera-side error remains, stop and use Insta360 repair.Insta360 treats persistent camera Wi-Fi malfunction as hardware service, not another password attempt.
App shows 9,4, 9,8, 9,13, or the listed negative codesForget the network, type the password from the camera, then open the app.Forgetting the network and entering the camera password again is Insta360’s documented remedy for that code set; the article does not assign a cause.
Connection works after factory resetRe-enter language and capture settings; look for existing files on the SD card.Insta360 states reset restores system settings and does not delete photos and videos on the card.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not keep pairing after a camera-side Wi-Fi malfunction or Initializing state that survives one restart.
  • Do not assume Bluetooth-only pairing will replace Wi-Fi.
  • Do not factory-reset to “delete bad files”; that is not what X4 reset does.
