Reconnect a Bluetooth accessory to an iPhone or iPad

Check discovery mode, proximity, accessory power, app permission, competing pairings, compatibility, and the correct Apple escalation branch.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Place the accessory near the iPhone or iPad, put an unpaired accessory in discovery mode, restart the accessory, and confirm it is charged or powered. If it was connected before, unpair it, return it to discovery mode, and pair again. If it still pairs with another device, unpair it there before retrying. Check Bluetooth permission for any companion app. Contact Apple if Bluetooth is grayed out or no accessories can connect; ask the accessory maker to confirm compatibility when only that product fails.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Bluetooth keyboards, speakers, controllers, wearables, vehicle accessories, and similar products that will not pair or reconnect to an iPhone or iPad.

Does not cover

AirPods-specific setup, Apple Watch pairing, Wi-Fi accessories, Bluetooth audio quality after connection, car manufacturer procedures, or unsupported accessory firmware.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Prove power, discovery, and proximity

Move the accessory close to the iPhone or iPad, turn the accessory off and back on, and enter its manufacturer-documented discovery mode.

  2. 02

    Check the companion app permission

When the product uses an app, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth and make sure that app is allowed to use Bluetooth.

  3. 03

    Replace a stale pairing

If the accessory was previously connected to this device, unpair it, put it back in discovery mode, and pair it again from Bluetooth settings.

  4. 04

Remove competing hosts and check compatibility

If the accessory works with another device, unpair it from that device and retry the iPhone or iPad. Ask the accessory manufacturer to confirm current iOS or iPadOS compatibility when only this product still fails.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not repeatedly factory-reset an accessory before checking its own manual and competing pairings.
  • Stop using a damaged, swollen, wet, or unusually hot battery-powered accessory.
  • Contact Apple when Bluetooth is unavailable or every known-compatible accessory fails; contact the accessory manufacturer when only its product fails.
