Fix a Mac connected to Wi-Fi with no internet

Separate Wi-Fi association, DHCP address, date and time, macOS, VPN software, router, ISP, and wireless-environment causes.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

First confirm the Mac has joined the intended Wi-Fi network. Restart the Mac so it can renew its assigned internet address, verify date and time, and update macOS from another working network if necessary. Temporarily isolate VPN or security software that interacts with networking. Restart and update the router, review Wi-Fi Recommendations, and open Wireless Diagnostics by Option-clicking Wi-Fi. If another network works, contact the original network administrator or ISP.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Mac computers that show a Wi-Fi connection but cannot reach websites, email, or other internet services, or whose internet works only on another network.

Does not cover

A Mac that cannot see or join any Wi-Fi network, enterprise credentials, router configuration beyond Apple’s recommendations, VPN vendor repair, Ethernet-only faults, or ISP line repair.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

Confirm Wi-Fi association and renew the Mac state

Join the intended network, then restart the Mac and test again. If preferred, use macOS network settings to renew the DHCP lease manually.

  2. 02

Correct time and install macOS updates

Verify date and time are correct. If another network works, use it to install the latest macOS update available for the Mac.

  3. 03

    Isolate VPN and router state

Follow the VPN or security vendor’s instructions to disable its network interaction for one controlled test. If you manage the router, install its recommended firmware and restart it.

  4. 04

Use macOS diagnostics and another network

Open Wi-Fi Recommendations when offered. Option-click Wi-Fi and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics. Compare the Mac on another network and contact the ISP or administrator if only the original network fails.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not remove VPN or security software without its vendor’s documented disable or uninstall process.
  • Do not reset the Mac when other devices prove the router or ISP is also offline.
  • Contact Apple when the Mac fails across known-working networks after updates and diagnostics; contact the network administrator or ISP when only one network fails.
