Start with the headset you own
A first-time buyer can choose either model. If you own Quest 2, Quest 3S keeps that headset’s optical stack; Quest 3 changes both the processor generation and the lenses. If you own Quest 3, moving to 3S keeps the same named chip and memory while giving up display and optical advantages.
Quest 3S can be a good first purchase and a weak upgrade. Your starting point changes the answer.
Pay for Quest 3 when you want a different view
Quest 3 uses pancake lenses, continuous IPD adjustment, 2064×2208 pixels per eye at 25 PPD, and a listed 110° by 96° field of view. Quest 3S uses Fresnel lenses, three IPD positions, 1832×1920 pixels per eye at 20 PPD, and a listed 96° by 90° field of view.
These are the strongest documented reasons to pay more for Quest 3. We have not measured comfort, glare, or image quality.

Choose storage before comparing price
Meta currently lists Quest 3S with 128 GB or 256 GB and Quest 3 with 512 GB. Check the United States store when you buy because prices, promotions, and bundles change.
The cheaper headset stops feeling cheap if you spend your time deleting and reinstalling large games.
Do not pay extra for features both models share
Both models use the XR2 Gen 2 chip, 8 GB memory, Wi-Fi 6E, color passthrough, and Touch Plus controllers. They share the current Quest app library. Both can use Meta Quest Link by cable or Air Link over Wi-Fi for PC VR.
Do not pay more expecting a different processor class or a separate game library.
Count cables and accessories separately
Both headsets include a charging cable and power adapter; the dock is separate. Quest 3 lists a depth sensor and 3.5 mm audio jack that 3S does not. Confirm your strap, facial interface, prescription lenses, dock, cable, and headphones against the exact headset.
Replacing accessories can erase part of the saving you expected from Quest 3S.

Those are the meaningful hardware upgrades; the chip and memory do not change between the two models.
Meta describes Quest 3S as using the Quest 2 optical stack, so 3S does not deliver the full optical change Quest 3 does.
Quest 3S uses the same processor and memory while giving up Quest 3’s optical, field-of-view, storage, depth-sensor, and audio-jack rows.
